Competency 4: Engage in Practice-Informed Research and Research Informed Practice
My Social Justice Advocacy paper serves as an artifact demonstrating my ability to engage in practice-informed research and research-informed practice. In this assignment, I analyzed a Chicago Tribune article about Brooklyn, Illinois—one of the oldest Black towns in the United States—and wrote a letter to the editor advocating for continued media attention and policy support for the community. In developing my argument, I synthesized multiple sources of evidence, including historical scholarship, policy data, and social work ethical frameworks, to better understand the systemic disinvestment affecting Brooklyn and similar historically marginalized communities. Integrating research on structural racism, poverty, and community development allowed me to critically evaluate how historical and contemporary policies contribute to inequities that impact communities of color. This process strengthened my ability to interpret and apply empirical and theoretical research to a real-world social issue and translate those findings into informed advocacy.
This assignment also strengthened my understanding of how social workers critically evaluate research through an anti-oppressive and culturally informed lens. By reviewing historical and policy research related to racial inequality, I considered how systemic bias, disinvestment, and political decisions shape community outcomes. The process required me to assess the credibility and relevance of sources while connecting academic research to policy discussions and public awareness efforts. Additionally, writing a letter for a public audience helped me practice communicating research-informed perspectives in an accessible way for journalists, policymakers, and community members. This experience reinforced my understanding that social workers must both critically evaluate research and apply it ethically to inform practice decisions, advocate for equitable policies, and promote social justice.
